With March being nutrition month, I must quote nutritional pioneer Adele Davis who once spoke, "We are indeed much more than we eat, but what we eat can help us to become much more than who we are."

After seeing thousands of health transformations over my years in practice, what I know for sure is that food really matters. Eating well and feeling vibrant and energetic absolutely helps you get deeper on every level - physically, emotionally and even spiritually. Sounds crazy? It's not. I have seen clients transform their health and weight only to land a better job, discover a relationship they never dreamed of and feel more confident, engaged and focused in their daily life.

So... this March, to celebrate nutrition month, we encourage YOU to pick just one little health habit to improve. Increase your water, drop grain at night, lose those nagging 5-10 pounds or wake up earlier to stretch. Whatever it is, it all makes a difference at any age or any stage.

Healthy, Nutricious and Delicious Recipes

Mighty greens smoothie

Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds
  • 1 large handful of baby spinach
  • 1 baby cucumber
  • 1 teaspoon spirulina powder
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:
Add all ingredients into blender and blend on high until well combined, about 30 seconds - 1 minute.
Nutritional analysis: calories 258, fat 8g, carbohydrates 20g, fiber 5g, protein 28g


Immune boosting ginger and turmeric soup

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 1 cooking onion, chopped
  • 1 ½ lb of carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 inch piece of ginger, finely sliced
  • 2 teaspoons turmeric
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 L of low sodium vegetable stock

Directions:

Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the onion, carrot, celery and bay leaf and cook for 10 minutes, stirring often. Add the ginger, turmeric and garlic. Mix well and cook for five minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add vegetable stock and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, and then simmer for 15 minutes until the carrots are tender. Remove the bay leaf. Allow the soup to cool a little and then add small batches in a food processor until completely smooth. Return to heat and allow to warm up again. Allow to cool slightly before serving

Zoodles with meat sauce

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 large eggplant, cut into ½ inch pieces
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 red pepper, diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
  • 26 oz jar of tomato sauce (*make sure there is no added sugar!)
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 4 medium zucchinis, made into zoodles (with a spiralizer)
  • 2 tablespoons parmesan

Directions:

Heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add eggplant and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Remove eggplant from heat and set aside. Heat remaining olive oil in pan and add meat, onion, and garlic. Cook until meat is no longer pink and onion has softened, about 7 minutes.
Add red pepper, sea salt, and pepper and cook for 2 minutes. Add tomato sauce, oregano, and prepared eggplant, and simmer for 5 minutes.
Divide zucchini strands among serving plates and top with eggplant sauce. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan if desired.

No bake energy balls

Makes 20 balls

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups rolled oats (certified gluten free if gluten sensitive)
  • 2 scoops of vanilla vegan protein powder
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon whole chia seeds
  • ½ cup natural almond butter
  • 3 tablespoons raw honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup unsalted sunflower seeds
  • ¼ cup dark chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened almond milk (add 1-2 tablespoons more if needed)

Directions:

Add oats, protein powder, cinnamon and chia seeds to a large bowl and gently mix together.
Next, add the almond butter, honey and vanilla extract and stir to combine well.
Add sunflower seeds and chocolate chips and combine. Mixture should be slightly sticky but still crumbly.
Slowly add in almond milk 1 tablespoon at a time and using hands combine until it comes together in a sticky ball that holds together. If mixture is too dry, add in more liquid but not so much that it won't hold shape.
Roll into balls using hands.
Place in an airtight container to set in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Store in fridge until ready to eat.

Nutritional analysis (per ball): calories 61, fat 2g, carbohydrates 9g, fiber 1g, protein 3g

  1. Eat more greens - Aim to eat greens with every meal! Throw kale into smoothies, have green salads, roast greens at dinner and add some chlorella or chlorophyll to your water
  2. Reduce sugars - Reduce white, refined sugars in your diet and swap for natural sources like coconut sugar, honey or maple syrup.
  3. Make sure you can pronounce ingredients - Read your labels and listed ingredients - if you canÂ’t read it, ditch it!
  4. Add fiber - Add flax seeds, fiber buds, and nuts and seeds to help fill you up, keep you full and stabilize blood sugar levels throughout the day.
  5. Shop the perimeter of your grocery store - Go for the fresh produce and meats as often as possible and avoid filling your cart with packaged and prepared foods.
