Tis the season of celebrating, eating a little too much and of course, being with our loved ones. In order to end 2015 with a bang (and start the New Year off just right), our holiday newsletter is filled with a ?must have? survival guide for weight loss, amazing recipes and some beautiful gift giving ideas. One of my dear friends from Cityline wrote a book that combines two of my favorite things - Canada and natural health. From hearty stew from Saskatchewan to Nova Scotia scallops - this recipe book is filled with some natural goodness you will not resist.

Sinless Truffles


  • ½ cup pitted prunes
  • ¼ cup pitted dates
  • 3 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa
  • ½ cup finely grated unsweetened coconut


In food processor drop prunes and dates through the feed hole one by one. Scrape the processor bowl and run until the prunes and dates are smooth.
Add remaining ingredients except for the coconut. Run until smooth and scrape bowl as needed.
Roll the mixture into 12 one-inch balls and roll in coconut (or crushed almonds) to coat.
Refrigerate at least 30 minutes.

Makes 12 balls

Nutritional Analysis: calories 139, fat 3g, carbohydrates 23g, fiber 4g, protein 7g

Cinnamon French Toast


  • 2 pieces of sprouted grain bread
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 1 dash cinnamon
  • 1 dash nutmeg
  • ½ tablespoon maple syrup


In a small bowl, whip the eggs, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Coat a skillet with coconut oil and set to medium heat. Dip the bread into the egg mixture (make sure to get both sides) and cook for 2 minutes per side, or until crisp. Drizzle with maple syrup or add a dollop of vanilla Greek yogurt for some protein. 
Serves 1

Walnut Crusted Salmon


  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseeds
  • 2 tablespoons lemon rind, grated
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh dill ? Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 salmon fillets, skin on
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • Lemon juice


In food processor, process walnuts, flax, lemon rind, oil, dill, salt and pepper using pulsing action until crumbly (mixture should slightly stick together). Set aside.
Place salmon fillets on plate (skin side down) and brush tops with mustard. Divide crust mixture evenly among the fillets and press onto the mustard. Allow prepared fish to sit in fridge for at least 15 minutes and up to 2 hours.
Bake in 350 F oven for about 15 minutes or until salmon flakes with a fork. Drizzle with lemon juice or serve with lemon slices.

Nutritional Analysis: calories 480, fat 34g, carbohydrates 4g, fiber 3g, protein 43g 

Healthy 3 Vegetable Mash


  • 1 large sweet potato, chopped
  • 2 parsnips, chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon dried dill
  • Sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste


Add vegetables to a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and then lower heat and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes, until vegetables are tender.
Drain water and reserve at least 1 cup of liquid.
Mash vegetables adding a splash of water as needed. Add dill, salt and pepper, to taste.
Serve hot.

Nutritional Analysis: calories 70, carbohydrates 16g, fiber 4g, protein 1g 

Grain free chocolate chip cookie bites
(made with a secret ingredient your family will never guess!)


  • 1 1/4 cups canned chickpeas, well-rinsed and patted dry
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips


Preheat your oven to 350°F / 175°C. Combine all the ingredients, except for the chocolate chips, in a food processor and process until very smooth, scraping the sides and the top to get the little chunks of chickpeas and process again until they're combined.
Put in the chocolate chips and stir it if you can, or pulse it once or twice. The mixture will be very thick and sticky. With wet hands, form into 1 1/2" balls.
Place onto a piece of parchment paper. If you want them to look more like normal cookies, press down slightly on the balls. They don't do much rising. Bake for about 10 minutes. Yields about fourteen 1 1/2" cookie dough balls.

Makes 14 Cookies

Nutritional Analysis: calories 354, fat 16g, carbohydrates 42g, fiber 7g, protein 15g


  1. Stay hydrated - Thirst can often be mistaken for hunger so make sure you stay nice and hydrated with pure water and herbal teas throughout the day.
  2. Minimize treats - Eat like the French this holiday season. Allow yourself to sample some of your favorite treats- but make your sample sizing a little smaller!
  3. Limit alcohol - Have wine spritzers or replace a third glass of alcohol with a glass of bubbly water.
  4. Plan your indulgences - What is your favorite food to indulge in this time of year? Make a mental plan on where and how you are going to indulge prior to attending your big family meal. 
  5. Keep moving! - Try to stay active over the holiday season with 10,000 steps everyday. Aim for 3-5 days of exercise (at least 45 minutes each day!)
