Published on June 27, 2021

If you think back to grade school, you'll remember learning about chlorophyll and its role in photosynthesis in plants. So what are the benefits of humans taking the chlorophyll supplements you've seen on the market? Keep reading to find out...

What is chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is present in plants and is used to trap sunlight in the process of photosynthesis to give plants their energy. We know that eating green plants is good for us and one of the reasons is for the presence of chlorophyll. In chlorophyll supplements, you will see the form chlorophyllin which is the medicinal chemical derived from chlorophyll. Chlorophyllin supplements are known to reduce oxidative stress in the body, help alkalize the system and have many other health benefits.

Health benefits of chlorophyll supplementation

Improves Digestion and Helps with Weight Loss

Some research suggests that chlorophyll supports a healthy metabolism and decreases feelings of hunger through hormone balance of ghrelin and insulin. For this reason, it was concluded that chlorophyll supplementation helps suppress appetite and reduces the risk of overeating throughout the day.

Protects Against Cancers

A few studies have shown that chlorophyllin can bind to carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) in the gastrointestinal tract and interfere with their absorption. As a result, this stops carcinogens from entering our circulatory system. There is also research to show that chlorophyll intake reduces the risk of DNA damage associated with the development of certain types of cancers.

Improves Detoxification

One of the livers many jobs is to detoxify the body and remove harmful substances from our system. Chlorophyll helps protect the liver by increasing phase II biotransformation enzymes which promotes optimal liver function and therefore eliminates harmful toxins from the body. This supplement may be good for you to consider if you are looking for additional liver support.

Neutralizes Body Odours

Chlorophyllin is known for its ability to neutralize body odours such as those from perspiration, intestinal gas, fecal odors as well as the prevention of mouth odours. If your intake of green vegetables is not optimal, supplementing with chlorophyllin to neutralize body odours could be helpful.

Chlorophyll supplements are not a cure for any disease or ailment, but they can be a good addition to your supplement routine for the reasons mentioned above. Speak with your healthcare provider before starting any supplements to make sure they are right for you.
